Police issue REMINDER on Door to Door Sales

Hello all you bloggers out there! News travels fast with Protection Plus Solutions. I thought I'd share with you an article written by Jeff Raasch with the Source Medica Group News. Jeff's article is very informative but most this isn't new.. this is typical of a lot of cities now trying to get a handle on Door to Door Solicitation.

But what the cities don't realize is that the solicitation license is only as good as the day they approved it! YEP.. that's the problem. They need to be screening their Sales Reps EACH AND EVERY MONTH to insure that the home owner is fully aware of the person knocking on their door.  Read on........

Police issue reminder on door-to-door sales

CEDAR RAPIDS - Police on Wednesday issued a reminder to ask questions of door-to-door sellers after receiving several calls from concerned residents.Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said each business representative that will be in the city limits is required by city ordinance to become licensed. A criminal background check is done before the application is approved by the mayor, city clerk and police.Everyone going door-to-door is required to carry the issued permit, which contains a city of Cedar Rapids embossed seal.Recent callers have mentioned door-to-door sales of house siding, home alarms and fundraising for mission work and a child abuse hotline.Hamblin said residents should ask questions about the name of the business and where it is located. Only write checks to businesses, not individuals. To verify there is a permit for a specific business, call the Cedar Rapids city clerk at (319) 286-5060. To report a possible scam, call police at (319) 286-5491

If that same sales rep was background screened with Protection Plus Solutions, all they'd have to do is show the home owner their ID badge with their picture, and ask them to go online and verify their ID badge by typing in their unique ID badge number to verify. No computer, no worries, then have them call our toll free 800 number to verify.

Don't let your company or your sales rep put their feet on the street without getting the RIGHT kind of background screening! Contact Protection Plus Solutions Today!

Don't LET a Care Provider take advantage of your LOVED ONE!

An Article in the Santa Barbara, California Independent, reports the continued need for background checks to be run on “Home Help” workers helping inside the house, especially if it involves taking care of an elderly person.
The Santa Barbra,California,County Sheriff’s department arrested a caregiver on charges of financial elder abuse. Christina Dee Bailon, 38, was arrested on charges of stealing money from an 80-year-old woman in Goleta. Detectives responded to a tip from the elderly woman’s accountant, who indicated that Bailon may have been taking advantage of her employer. After conducting an investigation, deputies were able to arrest Ms. Bailon for a violation of probation and, according to a Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department news release, she is currently being charged with commercial burglary, forgery, and financial elder abuse, with her bail set at $250,000.
Christina Bailon, who worked for the woman for only two months, is suspected of having stolen and cashed checks worth a total of $10,580 from multiple bank accounts. Sheriff’s investigators are now attempting to discover whether or not Bailon is responsible for defrauding other victims.
In order to prevent financial elder abuse, a statement issued by the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department recommended that people looking to hire a caregiver “conduct a background check and ask for references, which should be thoroughly verified.
In addition, Claudia Bernard, owner of Protection Plus Solutions says, “There are ways for families to successfully screen an applicant who wants to work with an elderly person. Nobody likes a stranger so why hire someone without knowing all the facts about them.  A thorough background check and verified resume should be a priority when allowing anyone to care for your loved one. You shouldn’t hire someone because they’ve worked for your neighbor, co-worker or someone you met at church, says Bernard” Family’s need “peace of mind” in knowing that the care provider they’ve hired is crime free. Bernard says family’s should conduct a thorough background check including a department of motor vehicles check especially if they’ll be driving their loved one to and from medical appointments, social security card verification, and sex offender check.  While a vast majority of care providers are caring and dedicated individuals, there are those that slip through the cracks, a background check is so important to protect your loved one.

The Cost of doing business can Cost you MORE than you think!!

When running any kind of business, be it a corporation, franchise, or even a mom and pop operation, it's important to know who we're hiring. One of the steps within that process is getting criminal background checks on your potential employees. You may only be interested in abiding by the hiring laws in your state, which do vary from state to state , or you may want reassurance that are employees have an honest and seemingly ethical background. Whatever the case, criminal background checks are essential if running a successful business is important to you.
As business owners, performing background checks on every subcontractor and employee may seem far too expensive. And it can be, but it's nothing compared to an expensive lawsuit. There are more and more companies that don't perform checks on their employees that are now dealing with major lawsuits. Can your corporation, franchise or small business survive a law suit for not running a proper background check, read this!

Carpet firm hit with $9.38M verdict in murder

OAKLAND, CA — In a verdict being called "a loud wake-up call" to service firms sending employees into people's homes, a California jury earlier this month determined that a company must pay $9.38 million in damages to the surviving spouse of a woman killed by a carpet cleaner.

The Alameda County Superior Court jury found America's Best Carpet Care negligent in not obtaining a background check on Jerrol Glenn Woods, 52, of Vallejo, who is serving life in prison without parole following the May 5, 1998, stabbing death of Kerry Spooner-Dean, 30. Woods pleaded guilty to murder with special circumstances two months later. He has multiple robbery convictions.

The case shows that employers can be held responsible for the actions of their employees, and the importance of conducting criminal background checks. The verdict is expected to further tarnish the image of carpet cleaners when it is featured as part of a program on service companies on ABC's 20/20 December 1.

Last week CM eNews Daily reported that ABM Industries Inc., Seattle, is being sued by a former employee who was raped on the job. Labor law attorney Jacob Monty says employers should protect themselves by running background checks on employees.

"Obviously, it's not cost-efficient to run checks on all of your employees," he says. But if employees are going into people's homes, are in a position of authority or they have access to keys, "you should do a background check on them."

Surviving spouse Daniel Dean says one of two goals in filing the wrongful death suit was to send a message to the industry that it must screen employees. The defense had presented evidence that screening was not common practice in the industry — in fact, that it was rare!
.
The Oakland Tribune notes a similar case: The survivors of Terenea Fermenick won a $1 million-plus settlement from the company that employed Giles Albert Nadey Jr.
Sent to clean carpets in a rectory in 1996, Nadey, a full-time employee of a carpet cleaning company, raped and killed a minister's wife.

One of the most innovative solutions for business owners that provide Home Care Services is to work with the latest and greatest background screening products available for your type of business. One such product for Home Care Service Providers is the ID Badging of their employees. The ID Badge is only issued when a candidate has successfully passed your companies background screening requirements. This type of premiere background security system will greatly enhance your company’s mission to find good employees who are legitimate and well qualified to perform “Home Care Services” as well as reduce your company’s liability exposure, provide the utmost level of protection, and afford security with peace of mind for the home owner or business for whom you provide service.

The ID Badge is customized to your corporation, franchise or business requirements. They typically have the employee’s picture, your company name or franchise, company logo, date of the background check, and that the background check is automatically re-checked monthly. Also, the home owner or business owner can verify the ID Badge by logging into a website or by calling an 800 number. Home owners have a real sense of security when they open their door because they can verify the person coming into their home.

Should criminal activity occur after you’ve hired the employee, the badge clearance is canceled and a failed symbol is also placed under their badge on the "Verify a Badge" page on the website, which is accessible to the home owner or business you serve.

Let's be informed business owners, we need to protect our company, customers, and employees as best as we can.

Don't take a good resume for Granted, CHECK THEM OUT!

I started protection Plus Solutions when my mother needed help after she had taken a nasty fall in 2009. Mother has diabetes and neuropathy in her feet, she had taken her Shitzu’s the dog park in San Francisco at 11am on a Sunday, and I got a call at midnight from Kaiser telling me that she was still unconscious! Three weeks later and lots of physical therapy she was ready to go home.

Home for her was compromising 12 stairs to get to her front door and she needed constant care for at least six months or longer. Mother of course insisted that she only needed someone a few hours at a time, and also insisted that we hire someone that she got to interview. So, my sister and I put out a placement ad describing her needs in the SF Chronicle and on Craigslist. We had five really great applicants and one gentleman in particular stood out. His resume was incredible and had phone numbers to back up his already outstanding credentials.

But as the old saying goes if something looks too good it probably isn't. Well, thank heavens I ran a background check. This man had recently been released from state prison in Texas for elder abuse against his own mother, and to make matters worse had a large restitution order for embezzlement against her! I contacted the state parole board in Texas and also the San Francisco police department to report my findings.

But, what could have happened if I hadn’t run a background check? Would my mother have been his next victim?  Long story short this is one of the reasons why I decided to start my own background screening company tailored around the In Home Care Service providers. Be it and Elder Care Provider, Nanny, Handyman to Door to Door Salesman, homeowners need to know who is coming into their home.

Protection Plus Solutions specializes in offering a great deal more than quality background screening.  We provide a unique ID Badge that is issued only when a candidate successfully passes the background check.

The ID Badge can be customized to specific employment requirements, but typically it will have the Care Provider’s picture, your company name, company logo, date of the background check and the disclosure that the Background is automatically re-checked monthly with Protection Plus Solutions CrimSPY feature.

Unlike other background screening companies that only do a search once per year, our monthly CrimSPY feature automatically runs each Care Provider every month with no additional cost to your company.  If criminal activity occurs, the badge clearance is canceled and the local franchises, as well as your corporate headquarters, are immediately notified.  A FAILED symbol is also placed by their badge on our status verification website which is accessible to the
Family or Senior.

This new and innovative level of security allows the Family or Senior to SEE the real-time background status by going into our website 24/7 and entering the serial number from the badge, or by calling our 1-800 number during normal business hours PST.  For further information I welcome you to visit our website at www.protectionplussolutions.com

CrimSPY also provides for the important tracking of the Care Provider.  If they quit or are released for any reason from one franchise location and apply for a position with any of your other franchise locations, you are alerted that this is duplication.  Even if no criminal activity has occurred, this will allow the opportunity for your own internal investigation as to any possible work performance or other issues in previous franchise locations.

This premiere background security system will greatly enhance any In Home Care Provider’s mission to find good Care Providers who are legitimate and well qualified to perform "In Home Care Services” as well as reduce your company’s liability exposure, provide the utmost level of protection, and will afford security and peace of mind for the Families and Seniors for whom you provide service.

Our Corporate Development Manager, Karissa Martin, and I would welcome an opportunity to provide you and your staff with an online visual tutorial of our products and what is available to provide the highest level of security for your Seniors.

You may already be using a background screening company, but I am certain that once you see our products, what they can do for the security of the Seniors you service, and our competitive pricing, you will want to change.  We can also tailor our products to fit the needs of your own background screening requirements.

This KID Isn't a BOY SCOUT!!

On a sunny Saturday afternoon I left my home around noon for about forty minutes. When I returned home a little neighbor girl, who had been riding her bike around the neighborhood, came to me and said a boy, about twelve years old, had been in my garage. She witnessed him enter the garage through the service door and spend a significant amount of time inside. As she told her story I debated with myself, "Am I really going to believe a ten-year old neighbor girl? Is it really that big of a deal? What is in my garage that is of value anyway? It's the middle of the day, and it's just a child, it's really no big deal." Was I right or wrong? I was absolutely wrong.
In this article my primary purpose is to inform you of what is happening in my local community, and very likely all around the country, and how you can protect yourself and your home from property theft.

I ignorantly convinced myself it was no big deal. I later found out it is a big deal and the boy in my garage was a scout, and I do not mean a Boy Scout. Scouting by definition is to search out, follow closely so as to spy upon, or to find by looking around. These scouts are in broad daylight, disguising themselves as regular folks taking a leisurely stroll through the neighborhood. While in reality they are scouting for items of value, and when they find something they can use or sell they return at night in an attempt to steal it. Yes, they are bold enough to walk into your garage, or anything else you have left unlocked.

We cannot prevent a scout from walking or driving by but we can arm ourselves with the knowledge of how to protect ourselves and our valuable possessions. There are very informative internet sites on how to protect your property.

The first practical step we took was to inform our neighbors, don't let them learn about scouting the hard way. Outdoor lighting is also very important, especially motion lights since they offer the element of surprise. Outdoor cameras are very affordable, and easy to install; often just the presence of a camera can deter questionable activity. Lastly, this is not Mayberry so lock your doors, even your garage doors.

My primary purpose in writing this article is to inform you of scouting. It is occurring and we need to be aware of it and begin taking precautions to protect from loss of property. As the owner of Protection Plus Solutions, we highly recommend that you contact your local Handyman Matters Franchise. They have qualified Handymen that can install the necessary protection you need to make your home safe! http://www.handymanmatters.com/
