New Policies for a New Year
The New Near is a time for New Year’s resolutions, and 2011 is no different. So, along with losing weight, exercising daily, and being a better person in general, you should consider one more resolution: protecting your Company from legal difficulties.
An often overlooked task during this season is updating your files. Check all your contracts, employee new hire packets, and forms, as well as any literature you have to get ready for 2011. Make sure to research for local, state, or federal regulatory changes which may affect you. It’s easy to forget and you may not end up making any changes at all, but the effects of not complying with new regulations or updating the language in your contracts can be devastating.
As you look through these forms ask yourself if there is anything you can do better; that includes updating your policy on background checks. Whether you have never run a background check in your life, or you run them yearly for all employees, there are always things to consider. Perhaps you have begun using company vehicles and need to add Motor Vehicle checks to your background check authorization form. Maybe you are sending employees into people’s homes and want to let your customers know they can feel secure with your company- this might mean monthly monitoring, Photo ID Badging with online verification, or both.
Drug tests are an important element in the criminal background screening repertoire. Many companies elect not to purchase drug tests because of the higher costs associated with them as opposed to a national instant criminal check. However, now is the perfect time to reassess. Employees under the influence make poor choices and can reflect negatively on your company image. Can your company afford the costs in image, legal fees, and good reputation that you can lose if you have an employee who is using? If not, consider instant drug tests using urinalysis. These tests are fast, reliable, and less easily tampered with than non-urine based tests.
Protection Plus Solutions is here to assist you with all these issues. We can help you update your employee packet to include a customized release form if you do not already have one. We provide all the services mentioned here as well. Feel free to contact us to get personal assistance in setting up an account for your company on our website http://ProtectionPlusSolutions.com
Have a wonderful New Year!

Who's REALLY looking after your Company?
Is your background screening service looking out for you, your company, franchise, or homeowner? Do you really feel you're getting the security you need as a business owner to send one of your Maids, Caregivers, Handymen, or Carpet Clearing Service people into a customer’s home? Wouldn't you want to stand out as a concerned business owner and offer the best protection for your business and customers?
Many companies typically do yearly background screening, but what happens if one of your employees gets into trouble after you've hired them? You'd never know until the following yearly background check, which could be too late for your company and too late for your customer! Protection Plus Solutions can help your company or franchise in this critical area of maintaining the highest level of security available for your customer.
Protection Plus Solutions offers a great deal more than quality background screening. We offer a unique ID Badge that is issued only when an employee successfully passes a background check.
Our ID Badge typically will have the employee’s picture, your company name or franchise, company logo, date of the background check and the disclosure that this employee’s background is automatically re-checked monthly with Protection Plus Solutions CrimSPY feature. This ID Badge can be customized to your business requirements
Unlike other background screening companies that only do a search once per year, our monthly CrimSPY feature automatically searches the employee every month with no additional cost to your company! If criminal activity occurs, the badge clearance is canceled and the local franchises, as well as your corporate headquarters, are immediately notified. A FAILED symbol is also placed by their badge on our status verification website which is accessible to your customer.
This new and innovative level of security allows your customer to SEE the real-time background clearance status by going into our website 24/7 and entering the serial number from the badge, or by calling our 1-800 number during normal business hours PST.

Police issue reminder on door-to-door sales
CEDAR RAPIDS - Police on Wednesday issued a reminder to ask questions of door-to-door sellers after receiving several calls from concerned residents.Sgt. Cristy Hamblin said each business representative that will be in the city limits is required by city ordinance to become licensed. A criminal background check is done before the application is approved by the mayor, city clerk and police.Everyone going door-to-door is required to carry the issued permit, which contains a city of Cedar Rapids embossed seal.Recent callers have mentioned door-to-door sales of house siding, home alarms and fundraising for mission work and a child abuse hotline.Hamblin said residents should ask questions about the name of the business and where it is located. Only write checks to businesses, not individuals. To verify there is a permit for a specific business, call the Cedar Rapids city clerk at (319) 286-5060. To report a possible scam, call police at (319) 286-5491

Don't LET a Care Provider take advantage of your LOVED ONE!
An Article in the Santa Barbara, California Independent, reports the continued need for background checks to be run on “Home Help” workers helping inside the house, especially if it involves taking care of an elderly person.
The Santa Barbra,California,County Sheriff’s department arrested a caregiver on charges of financial elder abuse. Christina Dee Bailon, 38, was arrested on charges of stealing money from an 80-year-old woman in Goleta. Detectives responded to a tip from the elderly woman’s accountant, who indicated that Bailon may have been taking advantage of her employer. After conducting an investigation, deputies were able to arrest Ms. Bailon for a violation of probation and, according to a Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department news release, she is currently being charged with commercial burglary, forgery, and financial elder abuse, with her bail set at $250,000.
Christina Bailon, who worked for the woman for only two months, is suspected of having stolen and cashed checks worth a total of $10,580 from multiple bank accounts. Sheriff’s investigators are now attempting to discover whether or not Bailon is responsible for defrauding other victims.
In order to prevent financial elder abuse, a statement issued by the Santa Barbara Sheriff’s Department recommended that people looking to hire a caregiver “conduct a background check and ask for references, which should be thoroughly verified.
In addition, Claudia Bernard, owner of Protection Plus Solutions says, “There are ways for families to successfully screen an applicant who wants to work with an elderly person. Nobody likes a stranger so why hire someone without knowing all the facts about them. A thorough background check and verified resume should be a priority when allowing anyone to care for your loved one. You shouldn’t hire someone because they’ve worked for your neighbor, co-worker or someone you met at church, says Bernard” Family’s need “peace of mind” in knowing that the care provider they’ve hired is crime free. Bernard says family’s should conduct a thorough background check including a department of motor vehicles check especially if they’ll be driving their loved one to and from medical appointments, social security card verification, and sex offender check. While a vast majority of care providers are caring and dedicated individuals, there are those that slip through the cracks, a background check is so important to protect your loved one.
